Alcorn State, MS--Alcorn State stopped their three game skid as they held off Alabama State, 61-60.
The Hornets took the early lead for the first seven minutes before the Braves took the driver seat. Alcorn State maintained the lead, but Tramaine Butler's free throw gave the Hornets the edge until a Hornets foul allowed Xavian Rimmer to bank two free throws just before the half. The score was tied four times, but Alcorn clung to a one point lead at the half, 22-21.
Alabama State came out in the second half to take the lead with a 3 pointer from Tramaine Butler. Twann Oakley's dunk gave the Braves a one point lead. The Braves and Hornets would trade baskets to take the lead, but in the final four minutes Alcorn State won the battle of scoring to capture their second SWAC victory in a 61-60 thriller.
Alcorn State shot 46.8% from field goal range while hitting 13 of 15 (86.7 %) at the free throw line.
Tramaine Butler of Alabama State led all scorers with 19 points. Xavian Rimmer was the Braves leading scorer with 13 points while Anthony Nieves, Ken McDonald and Twann Oakley held double digit scoring with 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
