Alcorn State, MS--The Lady Braves improved to 7-12 overall and 5-2 in SWAC play as they defeated Alabama State, 56-49.
Alcorn's An-Juvan Andrews scored the first basket of the game before Alabama State captured the lead early on. Alcorn State managed to clear the lead with a 3 pointer from Breanna Whitfield at the 10:43 mark in the first half.
The Lady Braves went on an five point run to push the score in their favor, 17-10. Taila Arrington scored two free throws for the Lady Hornets to help them out, but Alcorn State continued to find scoring opportunities to stay ahead of Alabama State.
The Lady Braves took a nine point lead in the locker room with a score of 26-17.
Alcorn State continued to hold off the Lady Hornets in the second half with key shots from the Lady Braves' squad. Alabama State nipped at the Lady Braves lead to tie the game at the 3:10 mark. Alcorn State managed to pull off the victory in the final minutes with free throws from Sharnika Breedlove, Renelle Richmond and Carolinsa Crumbly.
Alcorn State shot 24.1% from field goal range while hitting 27 of 40 (67.5 %) at the free throw line.
Kiara Ruffin led all scorers with 15 points.
