Lady Braves hold off Alabama A&M, 49-45

Alcorn State, MS—Alcorn State pulled off a come from behind victory over Alabama A&M to improve to 6-2 in SWAC Action. 
 
First half action for both teams proved to be very defensive as both teams had multiple turnovers and missed shots before Alabama A&M edged a 10-8 lead.  Both teams battled to tie the lead before Alcorn State commanded the lead with 2:36 remaining until the half.
 
A Lady Braves turnover provided Alabama A&M the momentum they needed to capture a four point lead going into the locker room with a score of 20-16.
 
The Lady Bulldogs continued to feed off of the first half momentum as they remained in control of the game for the large part of the second half.  A jumper by Sharnika Breedlove allowed Alcorn to tie the game at 44-44 with 1:45 remaining.  With time winding down, the momentum finally shifted in the favor of the Lady Braves as Renelle Richmond came up big in the final minute to knock down a lay-up and free throw to give a 2- point advantage to Alcorn.  Kiara Ruffin's two free throws gave the Lady Braves some extra cushion in the final seconds of the game.    
 
Alcorn State shot 33.3% from field goal range while hitting 11 of 15 (73.3 %) at the free throw line. 
 
Whiquitta Tobar of Alabama A&M led all scorers with 16 points.  Renelle Richmond posted 14 points for the Lady Braves in their victory, with 13 of her points coming in the second half.
 
The Lady Braves will travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to face the Jaguars of Southern University on Saturday, January 28, 2012.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Fans can listen live on WPRL 91.7 FM and www.alcornsports.com.
