Alcorn State captures win over Texas Southern

Houston, TX--The Lady Braves captured their first win of the SWAC season with a 51-48 victory over Texas Southern. During the first half, Alcorn State trailed by as many as fifteen points.

The Lady Braves put their scoring wheels in motion during the second half as An-Juvan Andrews scored two buckets to cut Texas Southern's lead to eight points. Alcorn State continued to chip away at the Lady Tigers' lead before Carolinsia Crumbly's layup at the 8:56 mark gave the Lady Braves a one point lead. Alcorn State and Texas Southern would battle for the lead before the Lady Braves took possession within the final seven minutes of the game. A lay-up by Janelle McQueen gave Texas Southern a brief lead before Alcorn State regained the lead with 18 seconds left in the game as the Lady Braves pulled an upset over Texas Southern.

Alcorn State shot 34% from field goal range while hitting 10 of 16 (62.5 %) at the free throw line. The Lady Braves out-rebounded the Lady Tigers 39-36 and were 5 for 14 (35.7 %) from downtown.

Carolinsia Crumbly and Kiara Ruffin led the Lady Braves in scoring with 10 and 13 points respectively.

The Lady Braves will travel to Prairie View, Texas to face the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm. Fans can listen live on WPRL 91.7 FM and www.alcornsports.com.
