Garland, TX—The Lady Braves advanced to the second round of the 2012 SWAC Tournament as they defeated the Golden Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 69-49.
Alcorn State wasted no time in getting on the scoreboards, forcing a turnover to score two points. The Lady Braves never let up taking every opportunity to score off of miscues by UAPB and creating a sizable lead in the double digits early on.
Alcorn State held a twenty point lead at the half, 36-16.
In the second half of play, the Lady Braves extended their lead by as many as twenty-nine points. Alcorn State continued to dominate the game by going on an 8-0 run to seal the deal without a threat from Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Kiara Ruffin led Alcorn State in scoring with 16 points,
Carolinsia Crumbly and
Sharnika Breedlove also scored in double digits adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Alcorn State scored 24 points in the paint with the bench contributing 26 points in a key win for the Lady Braves. The Lady Braves out-rebounded the Arkansas-Pine Bluff 42-32 while shooting 64.5 % percent from the charity stripe.
The Lady Braves will face the #2 seed, Southern University on tomorrow, March 7, 2012. Tip-off is set for 10 AM at the Special Events Center in Garland, Texas. Fans can listen live on
