Natchez, MS— In efforts to promote basketball, Alcorn State Head Men's Basketball Coach,
Luther Riley began his satellite camp this week where he will make stops in cities around the state including Natchez, McComb, Ridgeland and Jackson.
Riley's first stop was in Natchez, Mississippi where he held a 12-hour day camp in which camp goers received instruction on ball handling, shooting form, team work, rebounding and discipline.
About 80 kids ranging from ages 5 to 17 attended Day One of a two day session which is held in the Natchez High School Gymnasium.
Marquiz Baker and
Anthony Nieves, members of the Alcorn State Men's Basketball Program were on hand to help assist Coach Riley in skill demonstration.
Baker commented “This is a great camp. Coach has taken the kids through great drills. They learn a lot and have fun. It's one of the best camps that I've seen in a long time.”
Nieves echoed similar praise for the event saying that “This is a great experience and he enjoyed working with the kids.”
Tommy McCoy of Port Gibson, Mississippi who attends Trinity High School in Natchez, MS stated “I have learned how to adjust my form to become a better shooter with Coach Riley's guidance.”
Alexis Morris of an eighth grader who attends Odom Academy in Beaumont, Texas commented that “Coach Riley has helped me with my shooting form, footwork and dribbling. I will be attending tomorrow. Also, he (Coach Riley) provides equal support to the males and females. This is a very good camp and it teaches the little things that you need to know about basketball.”
“I am very excited and very pleased with today's turnout. This is part of the rebuilding process where we get the communities involved. In order for a program to be successful, neighboring towns must be a part of our community outreach,” stated Riley.
Participants will receive a t-shirt an autographed poster and a picture with Coach Riley at each site.
Riley will conclude his satellite camp in Natchez, Mississippi on tomorrow evening at seven p.m. at the Natchez High School Gymnasium before heading to McComb on Wednesday.
