Box Score Lorman, MS-The Alcorn State Braves fell short of their fourth straight SWAC victory at the hands of the Golden Lions of the Arkansas Pine-Bluff. The Golden Lions outscored the Braves 39-21 in the second half to edge the Braves 62-52.
Both teams got off to great starts trading baskets for almost the entire first half. The Braves took over going on an 11-3 run when
Devonte Hampton drained a three-pointer from downtown to give the Braves a 25-20 lead with 3:25 left in the first half.
Senior guard
Anthony Nieves came back and knocked down two more three-pointers to give the Braves a 31-23 lead going into the locker room.
Nieves kept the drive going after the break connecting on another three-pointer giving the Braves their largest lead of the game 38-25. The Golden Lions had other plans for the rest of the way.
UAPB's Terrell Kennedy made a layup to knot the game up at 41-41 with 9:57 left to play.
A 10-3 run by the Golden Lions (5-12, 4-1) pushed the lead up to seven points, 51-44 on a pair of made free throws by UAPB's Kennedy.
The Braves charged back to cut the lead to five, 55-50 on made free throw by Nieves but it was too late.
Nieves was the only Braves player in double-figures with a game-high 23 points and 5-11 from behind the arc.
Lazabian Jackson led the Golden Lions with 17 points. Davon Haynes added 16 points and Terrell Kennedy chipped in 10 points.
The Braves (6-15, 4-2) hit the road to Alabama to take on Alabama A&M and Alabama State on Saturday, the 19th and Monday, the 21st. Tip-off is against Alabama A&M Saturday is at 4pm.
