Luckett Racks Up 27 Points to Hand Southern their First SWAC Loss

Box Score Lorman, Miss-LeAntwan Luckett scored a game-high 27 points tonight against the visiting Southern Jaguars.  The Braves outrebounded the Jaguars 37-21 to snap their 10-game winning streak, 61-57.
 
Senior Ian Francis scored four early points in the first half to give the Braves an 8-3 lead.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Southern's Derrick Beltran and Christopher Hyder tied the game at 10-10 with 11:26 to play in the first half.  Not much later, Beltran connected on two free throws to give the Jaguars the lead 12-10 but the Braves stormed back.
 
Freshman guard Devonte Hampton started a 13-0 run by knocking down a three-pointer from downtown to give the Braves a commanding 23-13 lead with 6:40 left in the first half. 
 
The Braves increased their lead to as many as 12 by a pair of made free throws by Luckett.  Malcolm Miller hit a jumper to cut the lead back to 10 but the Braves took a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
 
Alcorn's Michael Starks made a pair of free throws early in the second half to push the lead back to 10 with 19:52 to play.
 
Southern began to creep back in the game on a jumper by Javon Mitchell to cut the lead to 38-36 but the Braves were determined not to let Southern take the lead. The Braves led the entire second half.
 
Luckett nailed a three-pointer with 10:39 left to play to give the Braves a cushion lead, 45-37.  Southern was able to close the gap to four points on a layup by Mitchell to make the score 59-55 with .43 seconds left in the game. 
 
The Braves forced a late turnover and senior guard Anthony Nieves made a pair of free throws to send the Jaguars packing.
 
The Braves  (8-16, 6-3) shot 75 percent from the free throw line as a team.
 
Marquiz Baker was second in scoring for the Braves with 13 points.
 
Southern (14-7, 8-1) had three people in double-figures with Derrick Beltran leading the way with 15 points.  Javon Mitchell and Malcolm Miller both chipped in 10 points.
 
Up next for the Braves is rival Jackson State on next Saturday.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
