Box Score 2 Lorman, Miss. – The Alcorn State men's and women's kicked off their season openers' with a win tonight. The Lady Braves defeated Nebraska-Omaha 50-45 to snap a 12-game home losing streak while the men snuck pass Tougaloo with a 73-68 victory.
In the women's game, the Lady Braves went back and forth with the visiting Lady Mavericks.
Angelica Wilson-Reid scored the Lady Braves first basket of the game to go ahead 2-0.
A few minutes later Nebraska-Omaha guard Erika House nailed a 3-pointer to give the Lady Mavericks a 5-2 lead.
Senior
Tierro Frost was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made 2-out of-3 free throws to put the Lady Braves back ahead 6-5 at the 15:19 mark and they never looked back from there.
The Lady Braves maintained control of the lead for the rest of the game but the Lady Mavericks wouldn't go away.
Nebraska Omaha's Madi Robson hit a pair of free throws to cut the Lady Braves lead to one, 36-35.
A 3-pointer by Frost extended the Lady Braves to 39-35 with 11:26 left on the clock.
Twin sister
Kierro Frost gave the Lady Braves their largest lead of the game on a layup boosting the lead to 43-37 with 6:52 to play.
The Lady Braves only scored seven more points but were able to hold on to the victory.
Tierro Frost led all scorers with a game-high 21 points and five rebounds.
Lindsay Littlejohn chipped in 10 points and Wilson-Reid had five points with a game-high 13 rebounds.
On the men's side, the Braves picked up the slack late in the second half to pull off the win over Tougaloo.
Junior college transfer
Octavius Brown got the Braves off to a good start with back-to-back ferocious dunks to give the Braves an early 6-2 lead.
Touglaoo came back firing away on a 3-pointer by Ramon Wesley and the Braves were down 9-6.
At the half the Braves were down by two, 37-35 and managed to let Tougaloo push their lead up to nine points 55-46 with just under 12 minutes to play in the game.
Shaunessy Smith and
LeAntwan Luckett along with Brown put the Braves on their shoulders and carried them the rest of the way.
Smith went 5-for-5 and Luckett 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to get the Braves first win of the season.
Smith led the Braves with 16 points and Brown finished with 15 points. Luckett chipped in 14 while
Devonte Hampton added 10.
Up next for the Lady Braves is a trip to Boulder, Colo. to face Colorado. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
The men host Mississippi College on Tuesday at 7pm at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
