Box Score Montgomery, Ala.-After splitting in Saturday's double-header, the Braves managed to rally late to pick up the weekend series against Alabama State. The Braves were down 5-2 but scored three runs in the eighth inning and four runs in the ninth inning to complete the weekend with a 2-1 series win.
The Hornets hit the ground running in the bottom of the first scoring two runs on a wild pitch and an RBI double to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Braves went scoreless until the fifth inning when junior
Angel Polo hit an RBI single to center field scoring
Ryan Akins and
Ryant Piper hit a sacrifice bunt to score Polo tying the game at 2-2. But the Hornets had a few tricks up their sleeve in the fifth as well scoring five runs on four hits to go ahead 5-2.
In the top of the eighth, senior
Christian Hickman hit a RBI single to center field.
Angel Rosa scored on a fielder's choice play by the Hornets and
Ashton Lewis was able to single around
Ryan Akins for an RBI cutting the Hornets lead to 7-5 but the Braves were just warming up.
The Braves have been a comeback team all year and this time they did it with only one out left for the Hornets to close out the game. Piper stepped to the plate and was hit by the pitcher for the second straight inning and Josh Powell singled not too much later.
Alvin Jackson hit a RBI single to right center field scoring Piper to cut the lead to 7-6 putting the tying run on third.
Hickman came through for the Braves hitting a two RBI single scoring both Powell and Jackson to take an 8-7 lead. Akins would hit another single for the Braves to score Hickman and the Braves played held on to pick up the victory 9-7.
The Braves ( 8-25, 8-6) now turn their attention to SEC opponent Alabama on April 9th and 10th followed by a weekend series with Big East opponent South Florida.
