Box Score PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The Lady Braves never led in the first but fought hard to get back in the game to UAPB to overtime and defeat the Lady Golden Lions 64-58 to pick up their first SWAC victory of the season.
UAPB jumped out early to a 7-0 lead with just 2:30 minutes into the game. Freshman point guard
Jasmine Cunningham hit a three-pointer to get the Lady Braves on the scoreboard to cut the lead to 7-3 at the 16:00 mark.
Afterwards, the Lady Braves went cold from the field for a while allowing the Lady Golden Lions to go on a 9-2 run to open their lead up to 12, 16-4 with 12:17 to play in the first half.
Cunningham responded again for the Lady Braves to cut the lead to six, 21-15 at the 6:15 mark.
But UAPB's Christian Lesane scored 14 of her 28 points and went 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the first half to take the Lady Golden Lions to the locker room with a 31-22 lead.
The charge began in the second half on a basket by
Kierro Frost which led to the Lady Braves going on a 17-4 run.
Junior point guard, Cortini Cooper hit a jumper to tie the game at 37-37 with 10:28 to play.
About a minute and a half later,
Tierro Frost gave the Lady Braves their first lead of the game, 37-37, on a made layup with 8:40 to go.
Lesane answered the charge for UAPB on a layup of her own tying the game at 40-40.
The Lady Braves kept taking it to the Lady Golden Lions and found themselves up by six, 48-42 with 3:42 to play.
Lesane took over again scoring six consecutive points to tie the game at 50-50 with only .45 seconds to play in the game.
T. Frost made a layup to give the Lady Braves a two-point lead with .18 seconds to play. But UAPB's Cassidy Wright blazed right through the Lady Braves defense to tie the game at 52-52 and send the game into overtime.
In overtime,
Angelica Wilson-Reid scored four straight points for the Lady Braves to give the Lady Braves a slight 56-53 cushion with less than a minute and a half into the overtime period.
The Lady Braves led the entire overtime period to pick up the win and snap a 15-game winning streak.
The Lady Braves forced UAPB to 28 turnovers and scored 22 points off of Lady Golden Lions turnovers.
Frost led the Lady Braves with 25 points. Cunningham scored a career high 10 points for the Lady Braves.
Lesane led all scorers with 28 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lady Braves return to home this Saturday to face Alabama State at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
