Women's Volleyball: Lady Braves Finish 2-1 at Tougaloo Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 After a devastating loss in their SWAC East opener Friday night to Alabama State, the Lady Braves volleyball team was able to get back in the win column with wins over Concordia College and Edward Waters College at the Tougaloo Tri-Match yesterday.

The Lady Braves defeated Concordia College 3-1 and swept Edward Waters 3-0 yesterday.  The Lady Braves only loss came at the hands of Tougaloo in an exciting five-set match 3-2.

Freshman Lurlethia Jones registered a game-high 15 kills while freshman teammate Heather Jackson posted 13 kills to lead the Lady Braves to a 3-1 victory over Concordia College.  

After taking the first two sets 25-22 and 25-18, the Lady Braves fell in the third set to Concordia 30-28 to force a fourth set.

Despite not closing out the Lady Hornets in set three, the Lady Braves rebounded to take set four 25-18.

Sydney Mellom posted 44 assists and eight digs while Vanessa Ortega recorded 18 digs.

In game two for the Lady Braves, host Tougaloo was looking for revenge after being defeated by the Lady Braves in the season opener back in August.  This time it was the Lady Bulldogs taking the win in five sets over the Lady Braves.  Both teams went back and forth with the Lady Bulldogs capturing set one, 25-23.  In set two, the Lady Braves tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-9 win.  

Tougaloo took set three with a 25-21 win but the Lady Braves were the winners of set four with a 25-16 win to force the match to fifth set.  

The Lady Braves almost pulled off the win but an attack error ended the Lady Braves chances of winning of the set.  The Lady Braves fell in the final set 16-14.

Jones and Jackson led the Lady Braves once again with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.  Mellom recorded 42 assists, seven digs and seven kills.  Ortega had 17 digs.  

Lady Braves 3, Edward Waters 0
In their final match of the day, the Lady Braves managed to dominate Florida opponent Edward Waters in three sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-16).  

Jackson had six kills while Jones and Brisha Coffee each had five kills.  Mellom recorded 20 assists and freshman Kyla Menefee had three serving aces and eight digs to lead the Lady Braves to victory.

Jones finished the day with 35 kills and 12 digs while Jackson finished with 33 kills, three digs and three total blocks.  Mellom racked up 106 assists to go along with 11 kills, five serving aces and 24 digs.

Ortega recorded 39 total digs, seven serving aces and four kills.

The Lady Braves (6-12, 0-1) face SWAC East foe Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena, Miss. on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
