Box Score Houston, Texas - The Lady Braves had a commanding 11-point lead with just under 10 minutes to play but couldn't hold off Alabama A&M tonight in the opening round of the 2014 SWAC Basketball Tournament as the Lady Braves fall 64-62.
Alabama A&M scored the first two points of the game but the Lady Braves pulled out an 9-0 run to go ahead 9-2 on a layup by senior
Tierro Frost at the 15:53 mark of the first half.
The Lady Braves lead would get cut to two points until the Lady Braves pushed the lead back to 19-9 on a pair of jumpers by
Ashtin McNichols and
Kierro Frost with 12:00 left in the first half.
But Alabama A&M came charging back again led by Brittney Strickland to tie the game at 21-21 at the 7:39 mark. About a minute later A&M's Taylor Sippial knocked down a three-pointer to give the Lady Bulldogs the lead since opening the game 2-0.
The Lady Braves went to work going on a 16-5 run to finish the half and headed to the locker room with a 37-29 lead.
After the half, the Lady Braves held the lead for majority of the second half and even went ahead by as many as 11 points but A&M wasn't done yet.
The Lady Braves had costly turnovers which allowed A&M to get back in the game and cut it one, 57-56 on a layup by Strickland with 3:00 to play.
Strickland struck again on an offensive rebound and basket to give the Lady Bulldogs their first lead since mid-way through the first half.
With .37 seconds to play, the Lady Braves managed to regain the lead 62-61 but a falling jumper by Strickland put A&M back ahead 63-62 with just .18 seconds to play. Strickland was fouled on the shot but missed the free throw but a traveling call on the Lady Braves gave the ball back to A&M.
Kierro Frost fouled Strickland but she made 1-of-2 free throws which gave the Lady Braves another chance. Senior
Tierro Frost took the ball the length of the floor but was unsuccessful as missing the layup with .03 seconds to play and the game was in the books from there.
Tierro Frost, in her final game as a Lady Brave, led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds. McNichols scored 13 points while
Kierro Frost added 10 points.
Brittney Strickland led A&M with a game-high 28 points, six steals, and six rebounds. Jasmine Sanders finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
