Braves Survive Late Scare, Take the Weekend Series Against Mississippi Valley 2-1

LORMAN - Head baseball coach Barrett Rey knew his team had to win the series against Mississippi Valley this weekend. The Braves have previously lost their first two SWAC weekend series to Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The hitting of Earl Burl and Jared Listach lifted the Braves over the Delta Devils this weekend to capture the weekend series 2-1.

Game 1: Braves 5, Mississippi Valley 3

The Braves trailed majority of game 3-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Braves exploded with a five-run inning. Shaquille Cockrell hit an RBI single to score Scotty Peavey cutting the lead to 3-1.

Listach stepped to the plate a few batters later and hit a grand slam to give the Braves a 5-3 lead and the win.

Game 2: Mississippi Valley 8, Braves 6

The Braves allowed the Delta Devils to score five runs in the first two innings and they never looked back. Earl Burl hit a homerun in the sixth but it wasn't enough to overcome the Delta Devils.

Game 3: Braves 10, Mississippi Valley 8

Listach was at it again from the plate in the second inning hitting another grand slam (2nd of the weekend) to give the Braves a 5-1 lead.

The Braves continued to increase their lead when Burl hit a single but managed to race all the home on an error by the Delta Devils center fielder pushing the Braves lead to 7-1.

But the Delta Devils battled back scoring three runs in the sixth and eighth inning cutting the Braves lead to 9-8.

An RBI triple by Burl in the bottom of the eighth which scored Moses Charles to give the Braves a 10-8 lead. Good defense in the top of the ninth for the Braves secured the win.

The Braves move to 3-6 in confernce play and 3-23 overall with another three-game series this upcoming weekend against rival Jackson State.
