Box Score 2 LORMAN - After last night's walk-off home run by
Edgardo Salas, the Braves came into Sunday with tons of momentum looking to sweep Jackson State this afternoon. Jackson State took game one 12-9 and the Braves rallied late once again to defeat the Tigers in game two 7-6.
Game 1: Braves 9, Jackson State 12
The Braves found themselves in a tight jam througout the entire first game letting Jackson State take a commanding 9-0 lead.
In the seventh inning the bats came alive for the Braves.
Josh Powell,
Angel Polo, and
Ashton Lewis each hit a single before
Christian Hickman stepped to the plate. Hickman hit an RBI single to score Powell. Salas came to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to score Polo making the score 9-2.
Brandon Vega reached on a walk and
Moses Charles followed with a two RBI double to cut the lead to 9-4. But
Cedric Bell pinched hit for
Jared Listach and hit a three RBI double slimming Jackson State's lead to 9-7.
Powell stepped to the plate agian in the same inning and capitalized on an RBI triple to score Bell putting the Braves down one, 9-8.
The Braves tied the game at 9-9 on a sacrifice fly by
Angel Polo. The Braves scored a season-high nine runs in the seventh inning.
But Jackson State came away with three runs in the top of the ninth inning on a few miscues by the Braves to take game two of the weekend series 12-9.
Game 2: Braves 7, Jackson State 6
In game two, the Braves rallied late again to defeat the Tigers in the final game of the weekend 7-6.
The Braves jumped out to an 3-1 lead between the second and third innings after Jackson State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Polo scored on a pass ball by Jackson State's catcher and Vega hit a sacrifice in the second to score Hickman giving the Braves a 2-0 lead.
Powell singled in the third to score
Scotty Peavey extending the braves lead to 3-1.
Jackson State's Melvin Rodriguez hit a homer in the top of the fourth and Tylur Smith smashed a three RBI home run in the fifth inninng to retake the lead for the Tigers 5-3.
Jackson State would score again (6-3) before the Braves started their charge in the eighth inning. Charles led off the eighth inning with a double followed by Earl Burl's single. Peavey and Powell each recorded a single and a RBI scoring both Charles and Burl to cut the lead to 6-5.
Jackson State's pitcher loaded the bases and Hickman reached first base after being hit by a pitch which tied the game at 6-6.
The Braves held the Tigers to one hit and no runs in the top of the ninth. After Charles grounded out to first, Burl reached base on a walk. Peavey was the hero of the day hitting a shot to right center and Burl raced all the way from first to home giving the Braves their second come from behind victory of the weekend.
The Braves move to 5-7 in SWAC play and 5-24 overall. They face Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night in Hammond, La. before returning home with another SWAC weekend series as they welcome Alabama A&M to the reservation.
