Lady Braves Capture Two Victories at Stillman College Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA - After kicking the 2014 season off with two victories, the Alcorn State women's volleyball team dropped eight straight matches.  The Lady Braves were able to get back in the winning column this evening with wins over Stillman College and Fort Valley State at the Stillman College tri-match.

In the first game of the day, the Lady Braves faced host Stillman College and came out with a 3-1 victory.

Sophomore Sydney Mellom got the Lady Braves going collecting two serving aces for the first two points of the game.  The Lady Braves extended their lead from there to 16-6.  Stillman battled back to take their first lead of the set 22-21.  But the Lady Braves were able to take set one 27-25.

After falling in set two, the Lady Braves managed to take a close one in set three 25-22.  The Lady Braves found themselves in a dogfight in set four but behind some great serving by freshman Dnada Smith, they were able to extend their lead to take a 25-21 victory. 

Freshman Heather Jackson finished the game with a single game career-high 14 kills.  Mellom collected a season-high 38 assists.

Lady Braves 3, Fort Valley State 0
Game two was all about the Lady Braves against Fort Valley State.  Some great serving by Smith and senior Vanessa Ortega helped the Lady Braves survive set one 25-23.

The Lady Braves began set two with a 5-0 lead led by freshman Lurlethia Jones two kills.  The Lady Braves great start separated them from Fort Valley State to take set two 25-14.

Both teams went back and forth early in the third set but with kills from Ortega, Jones and Brisha Coffee, the Lady Braves increased their lead to 7-4.  After Fort Valley State tied the game at 8-8, the Lady Braves went to work and never looked back to take set three 25-20.

With the wins, the Lady Braves move to 4-8 on the season.  The last time the Lady Braves won four or more games was 10 years ago in 2004 (6-16).  

Up next for the Lady Braves is a home match against New Orleans on Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
