Grambling – The Alcorn State University Lady Braves volleyball team avenged their early season loss to the Grambling State University Lady Tigers by dominating them in three straight sets (25-18, 25-21, and 25-19).
In the first set, Alcorn jumped out to a 12-3 advantage by capitalizing on the Grambling's mistakes. Alcorn was able to go on several runs that hindered Grambling from making a comeback.
LURLETHIA JONES led Alcorn's defense to a solid defensive performance in the backcourt.
TAYLOR SCRIVEN and
HEATHER JACKSON led the attack in the first set.
The second set was much tighter than Alcorn expected. The teams would go back and forth, but Grambling took a 13-10 advantage. Alcorn went on a 9-2 run to break the game open. Grambling was able to claw back to within one point (20-21). Alcorn closed the set on a 5-1 run.
TAYLOR SCRIVEN and Kalee Miracle (4) led the attack in the second set.
SYDNEY MELLOM and
LETICIA GONZALES led Alcorn in the second set in assist (7).
In the third set, Alcorn struck first and battled to a 4-4 tie before going on a 7-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Grambling closed in on the lead to one (11-13) when Alcorn went on another run to take a 17-11 lead. Alcorn went on an 8-6 run to a three set sweep, winning the set 25-19. Maricle, and Scriven led the attack for the Alcorn. Mellom led in assist.
CAROL KIAM-ASSATO led the defense with six digs.
Scriven, who recorded 11 kills, led Alcorn's attack. Jackson followed with eight kills and Maricle with seven. Mellom led the game with 18 assist and Gonzales 15 assist. Kiam-Assato led the game with 10 digs.
Alcorn recorded nine aces and five blocks. They also recorded 40 kills over Grambling's 23.
Alcorn will face Southern University on October 12 in Baton Rouge before facing the Southwestern Athletic Western Division in Jackson, Mississippi, Friday October 16-17, 2015
