Game Recap: Baseball |

Braves Split With Jackson State on Day One of Weekend Series, Laird Records First Complete Game

Pitcher Colton Laird pitched a complete game this afternoon in game one the Braves three-game weekend series against Jackson State.  The Braves took game one, 9-8 but fell big to the Tigers in game two 21-3.

Game 1:  Braves 9, Jackson State 8
After scoreless innings through two, the Braves allowed the Tigers to score two runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nick Brooks was hit by a pitch to lead off.  Earl Burl II followed with a RBI double to score Brooks to get the Braves on the board, 5-1.  With two outs, junior Ashton Lewis hit a double to score Burl and the Braves finished the inning with two runs to make the score 5-2.

The Braves struck again two innings later.  Burl led off with a single but was put out at second on a double play.  Collin Carroll and Lewis hit back-to-back singles.  Payden Lynch followed with a RBI single to score Lewis to cut the Tigers lead to 5-3.

Jackson State scored two in the top half of the seventh but the Braves put together an even better seventh inning.  Cedric Walker and Brooks both hit singles earlier in the inning. Burl singled and Peavey connected on a RBI double to bring in Walker and Brooks.  Burl scored on a passed ball and Peavey scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashton Lewis.

The Tigers bounced back with one run in the eighth to retake the lead 8-7 but the Braves had other plans in the bottom half.  Walter Vives scored on a passed ball after Nick Brooks advanced to first base.  LaDerrick Williams scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.

Laird struck out five batters and only allowed three walks for his second win of the season.

Game 2:  Jackson State 21, Braves 3
The Tigers used a seven-run third inning and eight-run fifth inning to take a commanding 19-3 lead.  The pitching was just not there for the Braves in game two allowing eight walks and recording a season-high nine errors.

Scotty Peavey did manage to hit his second homerun of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Braves (4-6, 1-1) and Tigers (4-5, 1-1) conclude the weekend series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at McGowan Stadium.
