Baseball: Braves Split With Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Braves were in much need of a sweep or 2-1 series win over the Delta Devils this weekend.  In day one of the weekend series the Braves lost game one 5-3 but picked up a win in game two 10-8 against Mississippi Valley State.

Game 1: Mississippi Valley 5, Braves 3
Head Coach Barrett Rey switched up the lineup this past week and placed Scotty Peavey as the lead off hitter.  Peavey led off the game with a single.  Two batters later Collin Carroll singled to center field to score Peavey and the Braves were up 1-0.

Mississippi Valley scored two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in the bottom of the second to go ahead 3-1.  Later, the Delta Devils scored two runs the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-1.

The Braves were scoreless through seven innings after scoring in the first.  Walter Vives got things going for the Braves in the seventh inning with a single to left field.  Vives scored on the next hit ball by Cedric Walker to make the score 5-2.  LaDerrick Williams stepped in and recorded a triple for the Braves to score Walker to cut the lead to 5-3 but that was the last time the Braves scored a run.

Peavey scored a run and recorded a hit while Carroll recorded a hit and a RBI.

Game 2:  Braves 10, Mississippi Valley 8
Peavey led off again in game two with a double to left field.  Moses Charles reached on a error by the Delta Devils third baseman to score Peavey from first and the Braves took a 1-0 lead.

Jordan Boston got into the action and hit a RBI single to left field to score Charles.  The Delta Devils scored one run in the bottom half of the first inning and the Braves were up 2-1 after one inning.

Later on in the fourth inning, Vives led off with a single.  Wallace Rios picked up a RBI after grounding out to second to score Walker.  Peavey came up next and hit a RBI double to score Williams followed by another double by Charles to score Peavey.  The Braves extended their lead to 4-1 after the fourth inning.

In the sixth inning, Carroll connected for his third homerun of the season to give the Braves a 5-1 lead.  The Delta Devils finally got on the board again scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth innnig.

The Braves put together another big inning in the eighth inning.  Rios got things rolling in the inning with a lead-off single.  Next, Peavey recorded his third double of the game and two batters later Carroll brought in Rios and Peavey.  Nick Brooks recorded his first RBI of the game on a single to score Carroll and the Braves came away with three runs in the eighth inning to push their lead to 9-3.

After Peavey hit a RBI sacrifice in the top of the ninth inning, the Delta Devils racked up five runs but came up short in the comeback.

Peavey finished the game with three hits (3 doubles), three runs and two RBIs.  Carroll collected three RBIs, two hits and scored two runs.  Daniel Belmont picked up the win for the Braves on the mound. 

The Braves and Delta Devils conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
