Atlanta – The Alcorn State Braves opened the 2015 season in front of a crowd of 49,196. The Braves dropped their season opener 69-6 to #16 Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets took the opening drive 63 yards, in five plays for a touchdown on a Justin Thomas 13 yard scamper.
In the following possession, Alcorn State's
JOHN GIBBS, JR. threw a third down interception, deep in Alcorn territory. Georgia Tech took advantage, scoring on a six play 29 yard touchdown run.
GT, didn't slow down as they put up 48 first half points.
The Braves did get in a rhythm before half time, after being sacked on the first play of the drive, Gibbs fired off four straight passes to bring the Braves to the Yellow Jackets 18 yard line. Alcorn State could not capitalize and was stopped in the red zone. The Braves missed the 35 yard field goal as the time expired in the first half.
Georgia Tech scored on their first seven drives, and out-gained Alcorn State 553-272 in total offense.
The Braves momentum from the end of the first half, continued into the second half. Taking the opening drive of the second half, 71 yards in 10 plays, for an Aaron Baker, one yard rushing touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was intercepted.
Gibbs, had a team high 56 yards rushing, with Darryl Ragsdale, right behind him with 53 yards on 11 carries.
Gibbs, completed eight passes on 22 attempts for 50 yards.
LENORRIS FOOTMAN came in for Gibbs in the third quarter. Footman threw for 56 yards, completing two passes out of six attempts.
DAMON WATKINS led the team with twelve tackles and forced a fumble.,
Up next for the Braves is a trip to Montgomery, to face Eastern Division Southwestern Athletic Conference foe Alabama State. Kick-off is slated for July 12
th at 6:00 PM.
