Lady Braves Drop Weekend Matches to Grambling, UAPB

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Alcorn State University volleyball squad fell to Grambling Friday in straight sets and Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday in four during a quick road stint.

The Lady Braves (1-12, 0-4 SWAC) offense was spearheaded in the two matches by freshman Barbara Garrett (15 kills) and Brittney Dumas (13 kills), and anchored defensively by senior Carol Kiam-Assato (33 digs, five aces).

Grambling 3, Alcorn 0

Kiam-Assato registered 21 digs and four aces as the Lady Braves were downed 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 by the Lady Tigers at Hobdy Arena. Dumas and Garrett notched five kills apiece and junior Lurlethia Jones totaled four.

Alcorn went up 4-0 in the first set before Grambling ripped off a 7-0 run and outscored the Lady Braves 18-14 the remainder of the set behind five kills from Kevreion Ward.
Alcorn found itself in a 10-4 hole and dropped the second set after the Lady Tigers ended the set on a 15-7 run.

The Lady Braves only scored one of the first eight points in the third set and committed 13 attacking errors as Grambling rolled to a 25-16 victory to seal the match.

UAPB 3, Alcorn 1

Garrett fired 10 kills and senior setter Leticia Gonzales earned her first double-double (15 assists, 10 digs) of the season as the Lady Braves lost 25-10, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17 to the Lady Lions inside Clemmons Arena.

The Lady Braves fired just three kills to UAPB's 13 in the opening frame as the Lady Lions scored seven straight after the set came to a seven-point tie to take control and eventually pull away.

Dumas came alive in the second set, scoring four kills on an impressive .600 clip. Unfortunately Alcorn again committed seven attacking errors and UAPB made just three which allowed the Lady Lions to take a two-set lead.

The Lady Braves earned its first SWAC set of the season with the help of Garrett's five kills. The set consisted of eight ties and five lead changes. After UAPB saved match point at 24-23 on a Kendall Howard kill, a Jones kill and Kiam-Assato ace forced a fourth set.

Each team recorded eight kills in the deciding stanza, but Alcorn conceded the set with eight attacking errors. The Lady Braves took a 15-13 lead but were outscored 12-4 the rest of the way.

Alcorn returns home to the Davey L. Whitney Complex next week with two games on tap, versus Mississippi Valley State Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Jackson State Saturday at 1 p.m.
