LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University soccer team scored two goals in the second half of Sunday's match against Jackson State, but it was not enough as the Lady Tigers came out on top 4-2 at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.
JSU (2-7, 2-1 SWAC) netted three goals, one each by Jolene Ceniceros, Jessica Blair and Arriana Rieland, in the first half.
Lady Braves (1-4, 1-2 SWAC) redshirt freshman
Rita Okoro notched her third goal of the season in the 47
th minute as she snuck a shot past the Lady Tigers keeper into the bottom-left corner of the net.
Five minutes later, sophomore
Yaira Guardado continued to build the momentum for Alcorn as she took a skillfully played through ball from freshman Angelica Dugan and blasted a shot beyond the keeper's reach to make the match a one-point deficit at 3-2. It should be noted that Guardado has found the back of the net three times in the last two contests.
The Lady Tigers, however, responded with a goal in the 66
th minute to ice the comeback. Ceniceros tapped the ball in after a shot deflected off the crossbar and landed at her feet.
The Lady Braves conclude their five-game home stretch next weekend, facing Prairie View A&M Friday at 3 p.m. and Texas Southern Sunday at 2 p.m. inside Spinks-Casem Stadium.
