TUSCON, Ariz. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program had three scorers finish in double figures at the end of a 74-59 loss to Arizona Sunday afternoon at the McKale Center.
"I feel like we are getting better each time out," said head coach Courtney Pruitt. "We still aren't shooting the ball as well as I would like. We've got to become more consistent and not allow our opponents to go on runs."
Junior
Tia Sanders dropped 13 points to front the Lady Braves (0-2) scoring effort for the second consecutive game. Sophomore
Brianna Tolliver and junior
Alexus Freeman added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Freeman neared a double-double as she also grabbed nine boards.
Alcorn started the contest with a 4:09 scoring drought, allowing the Wildcats (1-0) to jump ahead 10-0 until senior
Brianna Luton drained a three-pointer. Later in the quarter down 14-3, the Lady Braves surged for a 10-point run of their own starting and ending with a Sanders three. This resulted in a one-point game at 14-13 and just a three-point deficit at the end of the first.
Sanders knocked down another shot from beyond the arc to commence the second. Arizona responded with another 10-point scoring flurry to eventually put the Alcorn in a 32-24 hole at halftime.
The Lady Braves were outscored 21-12 in the third quarter behind six points from Lady Wildcats forward LaBrittney Jones.
Alcorn then scored 23 points in the fourth quarter, sparked by six points each from Freeman and Tolliver. The Lady Braves held Arizona to 21 points and boasted a 12-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Alcorn resumes play Thursday in its home opener versus the University of Central Arkansas. First tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
NOTES
- Brianna Tolliver stuffed the stat sheet, totaling 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. She now has recorded a career-high three steals on three separate occasions.
- Alcorn connected on 5-of-15 threes and limited the Wildcats to just 18 percent (2-11) from beyond the arc.
- Alcorn now moves to 1-12 when allowing 70-plus points in a game
