Lady Braves To Conclude Season at Alabama A&M, Alabama State

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Looking to snap a 10-game losing streak, the Alcorn State University volleyball program will play in its final two games of the season Monday and Tuesday at Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, respectively.

The Lady Braves will face the Lady Bulldogs (10-20, 9-6 SWAC) twice Monday, at 3 and 7 p.m. before traveling to Montgomery for a 7 p.m. match Tuesday with the Lady Hornets (19-8, 16-0 SWAC).

This is the first match for the Alcorn against AAMU this season. ASU swept the Lady Braves earlier this season in Lorman.

Freshman Barbara Garrett leads Alcorn with 1.9 kills per set, but junior Heather Jackson has stepped up at right-side hitter. Jackson had the team's highest kill count the past two games, racking up 15 between the two.

Senior libero Carol Kiam-Assato has produced double-digit dig totals in 15 games including five with 20-plus. KIam-Assato ranks third in the SWAC in digs per set (4.3) and fifth in service aces per set (0.43).

Fellow senior Sydney Mellom has the third-best aces per set rate (0.45).

AAMU outside hitter Ashundria McNeal fronts the SWAC with 4.7 kills per set. She is the only student-athlete who averages more than four kills per set. Setter Riley Balsmeyer is also reaping the benefits of McNeal's stellar play, currently standing second in the conference with 8.5 assists per set.

The Lady Bulldogs have lost twice in their past seven SWAC matches. The two losses have come by way of ASU and Texas Southern, the top-two ranked teams in the league.

The Lady Hornets are flawless in SWAC play largely in part to its .292 attacking percentage, .074 opponent hitting percentage, 12.4 assists per set, 13.3 kills per set and 2.0 aces per set, all ranking first among league teams.

ASU duo Briana Dorsey (.485) and Ni'yesha Brown (.349) own the top-two attacking percentages in the conference.

The Lady Hornets have four hitters in SWAC top-10 of kills per set, including Brown (3.2), Bayle Bennett (2.9), Dorsey (2.8) and Krysta Medearis (2.4).

Lady Hornets setter Justus Tuiolosega fronts the team and the conference with 0.57 service aces per set.
