Braves Host Selma University in Home Opener Friday

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University men's basketball program will kick-off its 13-game home slate Friday when it hosts Selma University at 7 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
Alcorn (0-2) has been led by senior Marquis Vance who averages team-highs of 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds through two games. The 9.0 rebounds ranks first in the SWAC.
 
Also averaging in double-figures, junior Reginal Johnson scores 10.0 points per game and is coming off a 12-points, five-rebound performance against the Purple Aces. Johnson has registered a pair of double-doubles in his career.
 
The Braves are looking to shake off a pair of defeats to Loyola-Chicago and Evansville to start the season. Alcorn kept it even on the glass against the Ramblers as each team pulled down 32 rebounds. The Braves outrebounded the Purple Aces 34-33 on Monday.
 
Selma (0-4) has dropped contests to William Carey, Loyola (New Orleans), Mobile and Faulkner this season. Davante Brown leads the team with 16.3 points per game, while Dionne Parks averages 9.8 points per contest.
 
Friday will mark the first game the Braves will play with their brand new scoreboards and shot clocks at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. They were first used Thursday when the women's team hosted Central Arkansas.
 
The game can be heard via radio on 91.7 WPRL FM with Charles Edmond as the voice of the Braves.
 
NOTES
- With 984 career points, senior Marquis Vance is 16 away from 1,000.
 
- The Braves are looking to win their home opener for the sixth year in a row.
 
- Through two games, Alcorn leads the SWAC in blocks with 4.0 per contest. Vance and senior DeAndre Davis have rejected three apiece.
 
- The Braves have not been outrebounded in a game this season.
 
- Vance was the only player in the SWAC to register a double-double on opening night last Friday as he tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds against Loyola-Chicago. He followed it up with a team-high 19 points against Evansville on Monday.
 
- Along with Vance, senior Denzel Dulin also scored in double-figures against the Ramblers with 11 points. Davis swatted a career-high three blocks in the contest.
 
- Against Evansville on Monday, Johnson came in off the bench and posted 12 points and five rebounds. Freshman Maurice Howard, who started at point guard, also reach double-figures with 10 points to go along with his four rebounds and three assists.
 
- Head coach Montez Robinson is in his second season at the helm. He inherited a squad that went 6-26, 4-14 SWAC in 2014-15 and more-than tripled the team's win total last season. Robinson was a finalist for both the 2016 Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year and 2016 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year awards.
 
- Robinson coached Alcorn to its first winning SWAC season (13-5) since 2006-07 when it went 10-8. The 13 conference wins were the most since 2001-02 when the Braves finished 20-10, 16-2 SWAC and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
 
- Vance was named to the Preseason All-Conference Second-Team. His career-high is 30 points against Grambling State on Feb. 9, 2015. He's also scored at least 24 points two other times.
