TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will head east to face the University of Alabama Thursday in a 7 p.m. tilt inside Coleman Coliseum.
The game will be broadcast by SEC Network Plus. Hannah Chalker will be on the call with the play-by-play complemented by color analyst Rick Moody.
"The biggest thing is that we want to be competitive with a team like Alabama," said head coach Courtney Pruitt. "We are going in as the big-time underdogs so it's like a 'David and Goliath' battle. We just want to use this game as a learning point for our team. If you want to do well in the latter part of the season, then you have to play a team like Alabama to prepare you for conference play."
The Lady Braves (0-6) are coming off of a 59-45 loss to the University of Central Arkansas, a team that won the Southland Conference last season. Alcorn had the deficit down to two with 4:22 left in the third quarter before the Sugar Bears ended the game on a 18-6 run.
Senior Henrietta Wells tied a career high in scoring, dropping 16 points for the second consecutive contest. Additionally, Wells swatted five shots. She leads the Southwestern Athletic Conference and ranks sixth nationally with 3.7 blocks per game.
Junior Miracle Rushing secured nine rebounds, fronting Alcorn's rebounding efforts for the third straight game. She leads the squad with 53 boards. Fellow junior Alexus Freeman notched a career-best 3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio, dishing out seven assists and committing just two turnovers. Junior Tia Sanders added 13 points and has scored in double figures in five of six games this season.
The Crimson Tide (5-0) drubbed SWAC foe Alabama A&M 97-29 in their most recent contest. Alabama boasts the top defense in the country, limiting opponents to 42.6 points per game. The Tide also sit atop the Southeastern Conference with 49.6 rebounds per game.
Alabama has five scorers averaging double digits including Shaquera Wade (13.6), Meoshonti Knight (12.4), Jordan Lewis (11.2), Hannah Cook (11.2) and Ashley Knight (10.2).
