HOUSTON – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program will wrap up its tough non-conference slate Wednesday in a 7 p.m. bout against the University of Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Although the Lady Braves (0-10) are coming off back-to-back losses to Power 5 schools Texas Tech and Houston, there were several student-athletes who performed at an exceptionally high level.
Freshman
Jada Hargrove dished out a career-high three assists against the Lady Raiders while junior
Tia Sanders, Alcorn's leading scorer at 11.9 ppg, set a new personal best with 17 points versus the Horned Frogs.
The Cougars are 6-6 and were downed by 14 points to a UCA squad that also bested the Lady Braves by the same total twice this season.
Houston's offense is led by Chyanne Butler, who averages 9.9 points per game followed by Jasmyne Harris (9.6) and Angela Harris (8.9). Serithia Hawkins chips in 8.5 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per contest.
The Cougars have proven to play their best in clutch situations, outscoring opponents 225-196 in the fourth quarter this season.
Houston holds a 5-0 series advantage over Alcorn with the latest game being played in 2003.
NOTES
- Despite not having a win this season, the Lady Braves (295 | 0-10) rank ahead of conference foes Alabama A&M (315 | 2-7), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (321 | 3-7) and Jackson State (330 | 5-4) in the NCAA RPI, a testament to their grueling pre-SWAC schedule.
- Sanders has fronted Alcorn's scoring efforts in six of 10 games and has posted eight double-digit performances. She also has a team-high 22 three-pointers this season, shooting .297 from beyond the arc.
- Alcorn currently ranks atop the SWAC with 4.6 three-pointers made per contest. Sanders' 2.2 per game ranks third.
- Senior
Henrietta Wells has continued her reign as the league's top shot blocker, swatting 2.8 shots per contest.
- Junior forward
Miracle Rushing grabbed a career-high 16 boards versus SEMO - the most by any SWAC female student-athlete this season. Â She sits fifth in the SWAC at 7.1 rebounds per game.
- The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to
Dejah Joshua,
Bridgejae Patterson and
Brianna Tolliver. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while the Lady Braves have been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for the five consecutive games.
