Alcorn State Sweeps Kentucky State in Season Opener

Lorman, Miss. – Alcorn State University (2-0) pitchers combined for 21 strikeouts in Friday afternoon's double-header against Kentucky State University (0-2) in its season opener.

Game 1 (Alcorn 2 - KSU 1)

It took seven innings for the first run to cross home plate as Kentucky State's Kaitlin Oshiro struck a RBI double to center field to score Alysha Sakamura to take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Lady Braves junior Courtney Holt answered right back with a double up the middle. Stuck on second base, junior MONTANA HOLYFIELD struck a heater to right field, advancing Holt to third. With runners in scoring position junior SHAMBERLYNN ALOP sent the ball over the outstretch arms of the second baseman, scoring Holt and advancing Holyfield to third base. Senior SAMETRIA COLLINS knocked a sacrifice fly to left field to score Holyfield on the go ahead run 2-1.

Junior ASHLEY BREAL (1-0) pitched a masterful seven inning game, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one earned run.

Kentucky State's Cheyenne Carpenter (0-1) held the Lady Braves scoreless through six innings, allowing five hits, two runs and five strikeouts.

Game 2 (Alcorn 7 KSU 0)

Collins scored three times, went 3-of-4, recorded a double, two stolen bases and a single RBI to lead the Lady Braves past Kentucky State, 7-0, in game two.

The Lady Braves struck first in the bottom of the first. Collins scored after teammate ADRIANA GUTIERREZ was thrown out trying to steal. Alcorn State added three more runs in the bottom of the third and sixth inning to pad the lead to seven.

Junior Jasmine Castillo held Kentucky State to three hits, while striking out nine in six innings. The Lady Braves recorded 11 hits, and seven earned runs.

Hughes went 2-of-3, recorded a triple, two RBIs and one run. Alop also went 2-of-3 while recording a single RBI.

The Lady Braves will travel to Northwestern State University for some double-header action on Friday, Feb. 19. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m..
