Norianna Haynes Scores 32 as Alcorn State Defeats Southern University, 85-74

Box Score The Alcorn State University Lady Braves crushed the Southern University Lady Jaguars chances at a Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season crown after defeating the Lady Jaguars 85-74 in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Braves scored eight straight to open up the contest, before Southern started a run of their own, ending the quarter on a 19-10 run.

Alcorn turned the table in the second quarter, outscoring Southern 16-6. Alcorn took the lead on an ASHTIN MCNICHOLS jumper, to take a 22-21 advantage with 7:30 minutes left in the half.

NORIANNA HAYNES scored 21 second half points to pace the Lady Braves. Alcorn extended the lead to 22 points in the third quarter.

Haynes kept pace scoring 15 fourth quarter points, going 3-of-6 from the floor, her biggest contribution came from the charity strip, going 9-of-11, hitting six crucial free throws in the final five minutes of the game. Alcorn closed the game on an 8-4 run.

Alcorn saw four starters score in double figures.

Haynes recorded her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 32 points and 10 rebounds. This is Haynes' fourth time this season scoring over 30 points.

BRIANNA TOLLIVER scored a career high 19 points and six assist. ASHTIN MCNICHOLS scored 13 and JAZMIN STRANE scored 10 points and recorded seven rebounds.

Alcorn State shot 53 percent from the floor, shooting a season high 63.6 percent in the second half. Alcorn was on fire from the free throw line going 21-of-27 from the charity strip in the second half, shooting 77 percent for the game.

The Lady Braves will have Monday off before ending the season on a two game homestead versus Prairie View A&M University Thursday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. followed by Texas Southern University on Saturday, March 5 at 3 p.m.
