GM 2: Alcorn State Defeats Mississippi Valley State for First Conference Win
ITTA BENA, Miss – Head Coach Brett Richardson's squad recorded their first conference win over Mississippi Valley State 10-3, Saturday afternoon.
Mississippi Valley answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking the lead on a RBI ground out to take a 3-2 lead.
Alcorn regained the lead for good in the top of the fifth on a Carroll two RBI single, scoring Charles and WILBERT MALPHUS on an errant throw. The Braves added six more runs over the next four innings to defeat MVSU, 10-3.
The top of Alcorn State's line up broke out for the first time this season recording 13 hits, five runs and seven RBIs.
Several Braves hit season highs, Charles recorded a season high three runs and three hits. Rios recorded two runs, and four hits. Carroll recorded a season high four RBIs.
REGGIE JOHNSON recorded a no-decision in his start, surrendering three runs, four hits and striking out five. CARLOS LOPEZ recorded the win in relief pitching. In five innings, Lopez surrendered just one hit, striking out two and giving up no runs. GM 3: Alcorn State drops rubber match
Itta Bena, Miss – Alcorn surrendered a late lead, dropping their weekend series to Mississippi Valley State University 6-5.
Alcorn State's Walter Rios got it started for the Braves, crushing a two-run home run in the first inning. He then added a run in the top of the fourth on a CEDRIC WALKER RBI double. Mississippi Valley trimmed the lead 3-1 on a RBI ground out to score one.
Rios added to his RBI total, recording a RBI-double to extend the lead 4-1 in the top of the seventh. Mississippi Valley answered right back with a run in the bottom of the seventh to get within two runs at 4-2.
The Braves were held hitless in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth the Delta Devils lead-off batter was hit by a pitch and went on to steal second and third to get a runner in scoring position. Three hits later, Mississippi Valley took a 6-4 lead on a RBI single.
Alcorn State got within one on a COLLIN CARROLL run. With the tying run on second and go ahead run on first, with two outs, the Braves popped it up to second, dropping a 6-5 decision. Cornado Skepple recorded the loss, surrendering two runs and three hits.
Rios went two-of-five, recording three RBI and one run.
In the weekend series Alcorn State totaled a league leading (SWAC games only) 16 runs, 11 doubles, and a batting average of .327.
Alcorn returns to Lorman Tuesday at 4 p.m. when they host Sacred Heart for their mid-week tilt before hosting Jackson State, for their conference home-opener Friday at 6 p.m.
