Lady Braves Advance to Day Two of Conference Tournament

Box Score The Alcorn State University Lady Braves used a 13-0 second quarter run to put away the Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes 62-43 in the opening round of the 2016 Toyota SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament in Houston, Texas. With the win, the Lady Braves recorded their third straight victory over MVSU this season.

The Lady Braves controlled the first half using a tenacious full court press and eight steals to hold Mississippi Valley to just two second quarter points. Alcorn controlled the paint in the first half as well, outscoring Mississippi Valley 22-10 and out-rebounding the Devilettes 24-19. Alcorn scored 22 first half points off of turnovers alone to take a 37-13 lead into intermission.

"I thought we played well despite not being able to play NORIANNA HAYNES in key minutes," said head coach Courtney Pruitt.

The 2016 SWAC Player of the Year NORIANNA HAYNES gave the Lady Braves the spark off the bench that paced Alcorn with eight points and four rebounds in seven minutes of action in the first half.

In the second half, Alcorn State cruised past Mississippi Valley to take the game and advance to day two of tournament play.

Alcorn will take on Southern University Wednesday at 12 p.m. In their previous conference meetings both teams split the season each with home wins.
