HOUSTON, TX - The Alcorn State University Lady Braves ended their season in heartbreaking fashion by surrendering an 11 point fourth quarter lead and losing to the Southern University Lady Jaguars, 61-57 in the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The loss eliminated them from the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
For three quarters, the Lady Braves held their own against the No. 2 seed Lady Jaguars. The full court press frustrated All-SWAC selection Brittany Washington, holding her to 3-of-12 from the floor. Alcorn took a one point advantage and propelled it to a game high 12 point lead. Alcorn State held the Lady Jaguars to 31 percent shooting from the floor in the third quarter.
Five turnovers in a three minute span led to a 8-0 Southern run before Alcorn extended the lead back to five (53-48) on a NORIANNA HAYNES layup, ending a four minute scoring drought. Southern tied the game at 53 with 3:29 left in regulation. The Lady Jaguars used an 8-4 run, hitting 4 clutch free throws to close the game. Haynes ended her career securing her 13th double-double of the season, recording a game high 17 points and 18 rebounds.
Brianna Green led the Jaguars with 15 points and 12 rebounds to secure her own double-double.
ASHTIN MCNICHOLS recorded 14 points, her tenth consecutive game scoring in double figures.
