LAFAYETTE, La. - The Alcorn State University soccer team is set to take its preseason work to the pitch Sunday in its first match of the 2016 season at UL-Lafayette inside the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer Complex.
The contest will feature a 4 p.m. start.
Alcorn returns all three of last year's leading goal scorers in senior VIKTORIYA MIHAYLOVA, junior ALEXANDRA SALVADOR and sophomore YAIRA GUARDADO. Guardado recorded a team-high .412 shot on goal percentage.
"We are trying to better ourselves as a whole and have pride in wearing an Alcorn jersey," said Salvador, who was named team captain. "We didn't do very well the last two seasons so everyone has to step it up. I think we have numbers this year so we will have a pretty good season just from having more bodies."
The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off of an 8-10-2 season with an eighth-place Sun Belt Conference finish. ULL returns seven starters including senior duo Annika Schmidt and Kimberly Grasso who led the Ragin' Cajuns in scoring with six and five goals, respectively. They also bring back starting goalkeeper sophomore Cosette Morche who notched 100 saves last season.
