LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University football program had little time to celebrate its season-opening victory over Alabama State as it had just four days to prepare for Thursday when Arkansas-Pine Bluff heads to Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. bout.
Â
The Braves (1-0, 1-0 SWAC) blocked a last-second field goal attempt by the Hornets to solidify a 21-18 victory last Saturday. Redshirt-freshman quarterback
NOAH JOHNSON entered the game at halftime with the team trailing 10-7 after junior starter
LENORRIS FOOTMAN left with an ankle injury, and led the offense to a pair of touchdown drives including his own 17-yard touchdown scramble up the middle.
Â
Footman's status for Thursday is still to be determined.
Â
The Braves saw big contributions on both sides of the ball in the opener as they accumulated 213 rushing yards and did not allow a sack in the game. Defensively, Alcorn allowed just 283 yards of total offense, which is the lowest amount allowed by any team in the SWAC this season.
Â
Senior
MICHAEL HURNS doubled his career-high in tackles with a game-high 12. Senior
DARIEN ANDERSON and junior
MICHAEL BROOKS Jr. were also in double-figures with 11 tackles apiece.
Â
UAPB (0-2, 0-0 SWAC) will look to get in the win column after dropping its season opener to Tennessee State 44-0 and last weekend to Oklahoma Panhandle State 20-16. Brandon Duncan quarterbacks the offense and has thrown for 322 yards without an interception.
Â
Dante McDonald currently leads the Golden Lion rushers with 136 yards on 26 carries with one touchdown. In last week's contest against OPSU, McDonald rushed for 122 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown.
Â
Willie Duncan III leads the UAPB defense with 17 tackles through two games.
Â
The contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU. The contest can also be heard via radio on 91.7 WPRL FM with Charles Edmond on the call.
Â
MILITARY DAY
To honor the service and dedication of the men and women of the United States Military, the Alcorn State University football program will host Military Day Thursday.
Â
As part of the day's celebration, parking will be free and admission will be $5 as part of Family and Friends Day. Military personnel will have free admittance with a valid ID or uniform.
Â
Fans are asked to sit on the visitor side for full presence on ESPNU's live telecast.
Â
Alcorn State University would like to thank all military personnel once again for their tremendous support and dedication.
