Lady Braves Commence SWAC Play against Alabama State

LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program is set for its first Southwestern Athletic Conference match of the 2016 season Friday versus Alabama State beginning at 4:30 p.m. inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

"Expectations for this match are crucial," said Alcorn head volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas. "We are expected to play with passion, heart, leadership, understanding, fight and toughness. Starting off and finishing strong will allow us to compete and grow. Playing together will keep us focused on the game and winning."

Despite two three-set losses in the Jacksonville State Tri-Match, junior middle blocker HEATHER JACKSON was a bright spot for the Lady Braves (1-7), recording a team-high 11 kills on a .233 attacking percentage. Junior DNADA SMITH followed with eight kills, and junior LURLETHIA JONES and freshman BARBARA GARRETT totaled seven apiece to round out Alcorn's attack.

Senior setter SYDNEY MELLOM dished out 24 of the team's 37 assists at a rate of 4.0 per set. Senior libero CAROL KIAM-ASSATO held the backline with a team-high 17 digs.

Led by All-SWAC selections senior libero Jamie Coleman and junior middle blocker Briana Dorsey, the Lady Hornets (3-7) posted a 2-1 record this past weekend in their ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational. They secured wins over Chicago State and Savannah State, but dropped a four-setter against Troy.

Dorsey filled the stat sheet with 23 kills and 12 blocks during the two victories, but it was freshman outside hitter Krysta Medearis who fronted ASU offensively as she finished the weekend with 30 kills. Coleman notched a match-high 27 digs against Chicago State.

The match can be followed via live stats here and admission to all home volleyball games is free.
