LORMAN, Miss. - In the midst of a three-game home stand, the Alcorn State University volleyball program will host Jacksonville State Tuesday inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex with a 5:30 p.m. first serve.
"In order to win this game, we can't be the same team that we were against Alabama State," said head coach Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas. "In order to battle and compete with a team like Jacksonville State, we have to come in and do our job. You don't have to be 6-foot-5 to be a good volleyball player. You just have to be smart."
The Lady Braves (1-8) suffered a three-set loss Friday in their Southwestern Athletic Conference opener Friday versus Alabama State.
Six Alcorn student-athletes recorded multiple kills including senior setter SYDNEY MELLOM who was named Alcorn's Student-Athlete of the Week after filling the stat sheet with 10 assists, four kills, four digs, two service aces and an assisted block.
The Lady Braves increased their attacking percentage in each set. Juniors DNADA SMITH and LURLETHIA JONES spearheaded the Alcorn attack with six and five kills, respectively. Senior libero CAROL KIAM-ASSATO totaled a team-best seven digs.
Senior setter LETICIA GONZALES has accumulated a team-high nine service aces thus far, lifting the Lady Braves to 1.3 aces per set which ranks atop the SWAC.
The Gamecocks (9-8) most recently dropped a five-setter against UL-Monroe. Sadie Anderson (10), Kaylee Frear (10), Charis Ludtke (12) and Allyson Zuhlke (15) each notched double-digit kill totals.
Alcorn and JSU met earlier this season on Sept. 7 where the Gamecocks emerged victorious in three sets behind 14 kills and six blocks from Zuhlke.
