LORMAN, Miss. - The Alcorn State University volleyball program will wrap up its three-match home stretch in a Southwestern Athletic Conference duel with Southern at 4:30 p.m. Friday inside the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
"We have to be positive heading into this match," said Alcorn first-year head coach Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas. "The first 11 points or so of each set against Jacksonville State we battled, challenged and even led at one point, but we need to learn how to finish."
For the second straight match, senior setter Sydney Mellom filled the stat sheet with seven assists, five kills and three digs playing all the way around in the rotation. Fellow senior setter Leticia Gonzales nearly achieved a double-double on a team-high nine assists and seven digs. Freshman outside Barbara Garrett matched Mellom by firing five kills.
The Lady Braves (1-9, 0-1 SWAC) improved their team attacking percentage in each set for the second consecutive match.
SWAC Preseason First Team defensive specialist Diamond Williams anchors the Lady Jaguars (2-8, 1-1 SWAC) backline to the tune of 4.4 digs per set which ranks best in the SWAC. Williams' defensive output also sits Southern atop the conference in team digs per set (13.1).
The Lady Jaguars dropped their most recent match to Alabama State in straight sets. Arabella Hall, Southern's top attacker this season, recorded zero kills in the match, but outside hitter Melodie Malone shined as she managed eight kills in 21 attempts. Williams totaled a match-high 17 digs and has produced 10-plus digs in all but two matches this season.
