LORMAN, Miss. - Alcorn State University head men's basketball coach Montez Robinson announced Derek Thompson will serve as assistant coach on his staff alongside Frank Popieski and Delvin Thompson.
"I am honored to be joining Coach Robinson's staff and the Alcorn State family," Derek Thompson said. "The program is in great hands with Coach Robinson because of his leadership and bright basketball knowledge."
Derek Thompson joins the Braves after spending the past 11 months as a senior basketball coach with the Atlanta Hawks. There he performed on-court instruction at camps and clinics hosted by the Hawks' Community Basketball Programs Team in addition to assisting with the logistics of each event.
Before joining the Hawks, Derek Thompson spent 11 months as an assistant coach at Virginia Union and nearly four years as associate head coach and assistant athletic director at Miles College.
Derek Thompson also spent time as an assistant men's basketball coach at Clark Atlanta University, Southern University and his alma mater, Morris Brown College. He was the head men's basketball coach at Morris Brown from February 2001 to June 2003. Derek Thompson received a Bachelor of Science degree in therapeutic recreation in 1998.
"We are thrilled to have Derek join us as the final piece of our coaching staff," Robinson said. "He is equipped with over 10 years of coaching experience which will provide us with an edge on and off the court."
