Alcorn Game Notes | Live Radio
JACKSON, Miss. - The Alcorn State University women's basketball program is set to face conference rival Jackson State University Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. bout at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 7 but was postponed due to unsafe road conditions.
Despite a career-high 19 points from junior Alexus Freeman, Alcorn (1-13, 1-2 SWAC) dropped its most recent game, 86-63, to Grambling State. Freeman also added seven boards and five assists.
Junior Tia Sanders and senior Brianna Luton joined Freeman in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Braves lost senior Henrietta Wells, who is second in league play in rebounds per game (9.3), midway through the third quarter as she went over the foul limit. This played a big factor in Alcorn ending the game with a 43-33 rebounding disadvantage. The Lady Braves +4.0 rebounding margin still ranks second in the SWAC.
Alcorn still fronts the league in offensive rebounds per game (18.0) and offensive rebound percentage (.429). The Lady Braves rank second in the SWAC in rebounding margin (+4.0) and rebounds per contest (42.0).
After winning its conference opener 64-54 against Alabama A&M, JSU (7-6, 1-2 SWAC) has dropped two in a row to Alabama State and Southern. Senior center Kierra Adams notched a double-double on 25 points and 11 boards in the overtime loss to the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Tigers are fronted by Adams, who is averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game in league play. The 6-1 West Memphis, Arkansas, native is also tied with Wells atop the SWAC in blocks per game (2.7).
JSU converts plenty of treys on the offensive end, ranking second in league play with 4.7 three-pointers made per game.
NOTES
- Junior Tia Sanders has scored in double figures in 10 of 14 games this season. She has a team-high 29 three-pointers this season, shooting .284 from beyond the arc.
- The Lady Braves dropped both games to the Lady Tigers last season.
- The number 70 has a significant impact on Alcorn's W-L record. The Lady Braves are 7-2 when scoring 70-plus points and 1-20 when allowing 70-plus dating back to last season.
- The five returners for the Lady Braves, Brianna Luton, Talisa Sherman, Tori Spann, Brianna Tolliver and Henrietta Wells, have accounted for 42.9 percent of the team's total scoring this season.
- The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for nine straight games.
