LORMAN, Miss. – Coming off back-to-back conference wins over Jackson State University and Mississippi Valley State University, the Alcorn State University women's basketball program will look to extend its winning streak Monday in a 5:30 p.m. contest against the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
"[UAPB] is going to be a tough team," said women's basketball coach Courtney Pruitt. "They are going to give you a lot of defensive schemes. [UAPB head coach] Nate Kilbert is one of Alcorn's. His knowledge can give you several different strategies and schemes. It's going to be a good test for the girls Monday night. We just have to step up and do what we need to do to be successful."
The power went out at the Whitney Complex causing a 30-minute delay in tipoff Saturday. The Lady Braves (3-13, 3-2 SWAC) fittingly shot lights out, to the tune of a season's best 41.7 percent, in topping the Devilettes by a 69-49 margin. Alcorn connected on 7-of-13 shots from beyond the arc.
Junior
Tia Sanders led all scorers with 19 points on five treys and four free throws. Fellow juniors
Alexus Freeman and
Miracle Rushing joined her in double figures with 15 and 11, respectively. Freeman also added a career-high eight assists, marking the first Lady Brave to achieve that mark since Kiara Ruffin in 2012. Senior
Henrietta Wells totaled six blocks.
Alcorn recorded 13 steals and allowed MVSU, a team that entered the game leading the SWAC with 13.3 steals per contest, to just four takeaways. The Lady Braves limited the Devilettes to 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. Consequently, Alcorn's defense has given up 60.0 points per game during league play, right behind Alabama State's 59.2.
UAPB (4-11, 1-3 SWAC) picked up its lone SWAC victory over Alabama A&M 61-57. The Lady Lions have dropped games to Alabama State, MVSU and Southern.
The Lady Lions are led offensively by Destiny Brewton, their lone player in double figures at 12.0 points per game. Faith Ohanta follows at 9.8 points and a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest.
Fans attending Monday's game can expect plenty of three-pointers made as UAPB ranks second in the league behind the Lady Braves (5.0) with 4.3 threes made per game. The contest will also feature two of the SWAC's top shot-blockers in Wells (3.6/game) and Shawntayla Harris (2.3)
NOTES
- Freeman's 8-assist outing lifted her to the top of the league in assists per game. She's averaged 4.8.
- Saturday marked Wells' 11
th multiple-block outing of the season. She ranks 11
th among Division I female student-athletes in blocks per game.
- Sanders knocked down a career-high five treys against MVSU. This is the second time this season a Lady Brave drained five treys. Senior
Brianna Luton also reached that mark Nov. 17 against UCA.
- Freeman and Sanders are spearheading Alcorn's scoring efforts in league play, averaging 14.6 and 13.2 points per game, respectively.
