Lady Braves Hope to Rebound in Matchup Against Prairie View

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program looks to earn a victory Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. game against Prairie View A&M at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

The Lady Braves (0-12, 0-1 SWAC) nearly pulled out an upset Monday against Texas Southern, who was chosen to finish second in the league this season, before falling 57-53. Junior Alexus Freeman poured in a career-high 16 points on a 7-for-13 (.538) effort. That shooting percentage was also a career best.

Senior Henrietta Wells flirted with a triple-double for the second time this season. She notched a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds and needed just three more blocks to achieve the feat.

Alcorn led by seven with 2:21 left in the third quarter before the Lady Tigers (7-5, 1-0 SWAC) pulled off a 12-0 run to take a lead that the Lady Braves could not recover from. TSU's leading scorer and Preseason All-SWAC second teamer Joyce Kennerson finished with a game-high 24 points including 10 during the Lady Tigers' pivotal scoring run.

The Lady Panthers also dropped their conference opener, falling to Southern University by a score of 86-72. PVAMU features the SWAC's leading rebounder in La'Sha Hayes (8.0 rpg) and fourth-, fifth-, and eighth-highest scorers in Alexus Parker (15.3 ppg), Tori Carter (14.6) and Jeronia Allen (12.7).

The Lady Panthers boast the SWAC's second-best scoring offense (64.6 ppg), field goal percentage (.379) and three-point field goal percentage (.317).

NOTES
- Freeman's 16-point outing marked her fourth double-digit scoring performance this season. She also posted six assists resulting in the second-most in a game for her. She currently sits third in the league with 3.5 assists per contest.

- Junior guard Tia Sanders has been a key contributor to the Lady Braves offense, leading Alcorn's scoring efforts in six of 12 games and posting eight double-digit performances.

- The Lady Braves rank atop the SWAC with 4.6 threes made per contest; Sanders' 2.1 ranks third.

- Senior Henrietta Wells has continued her reign as the league's top shot blocker, swatting 3.1 shots per game. That number is good enough to rank 10^th among Division I female student-athletes (as of Jan. 3).

- Junior forward Miracle Rushing grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds versus SEMO – the most by any SWAC female student-athlete this season. She sits fifth in the SWAC with 7.1 rebounds per game.

- The Lady Braves have lost depth due to injuries to Dejah Joshua, Bridgejae Patterson and Brianna Tolliver, who were all considered key players on this year's squad. Joshua and Patterson each participated in one contest this season while Alcorn has been without Tolliver, a double-digit scorer in two of the first five games, for seven straight games.
