GRAMBLING, La. – Junior point guard
Alexus Freeman dropped a career-high 19 points and added seven rebounds and five assists as the Alcorn State University women's basketball program dropped an 86-63 decision Monday night against Grambling State University at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Talisa Sherman contributed her most productive rebounding performance of the season, also securing seven boards.
The Lady Braves (1-13, 1-2 SWAC) shot 35.8 percent from the floor while the Lady Tigers (5-10, 3-1 SWAC) posted a season-high 60.8 percent. Both teams converted three treys, but Grambling took six attempts to Alcorn's 20.
The Lady Braves did outscore the Lady Tigers 16-12 in second-chance points. Meanwhile Grambling finished the game with a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint and 12-0 edge in fast-break points.
Luton had a superb first half, scoring a team-high 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, resulting in just a 34-26 halftime deficit for Alcorn.
Unfortunately, senior
Henrietta Wells, the league's leading rebounder, only saw four minutes of the second half as she was hit with a foul and a technical at 5:58 left in the third which put her above the foul limit. The Lady Braves were outscored 39-29 the remainder of the contest.
After shooting 47.8 percent from the field in the opening half, Alcorn slipped to a 29.5-percent mark in the third and fourth quarters. The difference came in the third quarter where the Lady Braves were outscored 34-17. Alcorn and Grambling each scored 18 points in the final frame.
Preseason All-SWAC first teamer Shakyla Hill also notched 19 points to front the Lady Tigers. Monisha Neal (18), Jazmin Boyd (12) and Bre'Nae Andrews (11) joined Hill in the double-digit scoring column.
The Lady Braves return to action Wednesday in a makeup game at Jackson State. First tip at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
NOTES
- This marked Freeman's first career 15-5-5 game at Alcorn. Wells also secured a 15-5-5 against Prairie View.
- This was Freeman's fifth career double-digit scoring performance and Luton and Sanders' 10
th.
- Alcorn's 34 points allowed in the third quarter was the most in a quarter this season.
- The Lady Braves held an advantage in second-chance points despite a 43-33 rebounding disadvantage. Coming into tonight, Alcorn had the league's best rebounding margin (+11.0). The Lady Braves were outscored 29-17 in points off of turnovers and 25-17 from the bench.
- Wells' foulout marked her sixth of the season.
