HOUSTON, Texas. - The Alcorn State University women's soccer team goes on its longest trip of the season this weekend as the Lady Braves play conferences matches at Texas Southern Friday and Prairie View A&M on Sunday.
"It's very important for us to continue to earn respect around the league," said head coach Junior Noel. "Every game is important for us and since the conference championship is played away from home, we have to be comfortable playing on the road. Each of our conference games have been close contests, but not the results we need. It is imperative we start turning close games into results as there are no more moral victories. We need to be more aggressive offensively."
Redshirt-sophomore Rita Okoro leads the Lady Braves with three goals, followed by Alexandra Salvador with two goals and an assist. Freshman keeper Kameran Proby is 2-4 this season with one shutout. The McDonough, Ga. native has made 31 saves against 77 shots faced while allowing 10 goals (1.67 per game).
Texas Southern | Oct. 13 | 7 p.m.
The Lady Tigers (5-5-2, 4-1-1 SWAC) are third in the conference standings heading into this weekend and are coming off a 4-0 win at home last Sunday over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Freshman Kelly Sanders netted a pair of goals in the first half, with junior Briana Norwood and sophomore Maddy Phillips adding to the lead in the second.
Senior Paige Hayward leads the team this season with four goals and an assist. Norwood has a pair of goals with three assists and Sanders owns three scores with one assist. Tammy Syron is 3-2 this year with four shutouts. The freshman goalkeeper has 40 saves on 96 shots faced while allowing nine goals (0.95 per game).
Friday's match marks the 15th meeting in the all-time series. Alcorn will be looking for its first win over the Lady Tigers in program history.
Prairie View A&M | Oct. 15 | 1 p.m.
The Lady Panthers (3-8-1, 3-2-1 SWAC) earned a 1-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff last Friday and tied conference-leader Grambling State 3-3 in overtime last Sunday. Down 2-0 at halftime against the Lady Tigers, sophomore Blair Lane scored an Alexis Fields' corner kick to put PVAMU on the board. Lane then scored a penalty kick in the 60th minute to knot the game at 2-2. Senior Danielle Vargas gave the Lady Panthers the lead a couple minutes later, but GSU scored with 29 seconds remaining to force extra time.Â
Lane leads the team in scoring with three goals and sophomore Alexis Mack has a pair of scores with an assist. Senior Clarissa Ledesma is 1-3 with 58 saves and 16 goals allowed (1.93 per game).
Prairie View holds an 11-1-1 mark in the all-time series.
