Volleyball Concludes Tri-Match With Pair Of Losses

LORMAN, Miss. - Wiley College fought back from an 0-2 hole and William Carey earned a 3-1 decision as the Alcorn State University volleyball program fell to both teams in a Tri-Match Tuesday at the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium.

Freshman Octavia Dixon led the Lady Braves in the two matches with 24 kills, followed closely by junior Singryd Valadres with 22. Senior Brittney Dumas racked up 65 assists and freshman Fiapaipai Iosia served nine aces. Defensively, Iosia had 41 digs and Dixon chipped in 23. Valadares made a team-high eight blocks.

    

Wiley College | L, 2-3 (25-21, 25-23, 13-25, 21-25, 11-15)

Alcorn looked like it would earn the victory against Wiley College as the Lady Braves claimed the first two sets, but the Lady Wildcats (8-7) took the next pair to force a decisive fifth set. The final set was back-and-forth, but the visitors earned four-straight points to create some separation at 13-8. Dixon posted three consecutive kills to trim the lead to 13-11, but Wiley was able to close out the set for the comeback victory.

Dixon recorded a 16-kill, 11-dig double-double with an assist and a block. Valadares followed with 13 kills, Dumas contributed a season-high 46 assists. Iosia was close to a double-double as she served a season-high eight aces and led the team in digs with 24. 

William Carey | L, 1-3 (25-22, 27-29, 18-25, 19-25)

The opening set belonged to Alcorn with the Lady Braves opening on an 8-2 run.  The teams traded points the rest of the way as Alcorn won the set 25-22. The Lady Braves were ahead 18-13 in set two following a 5-0 run, but the Lady Crusaders (15-10) wrestled back the lead with a 5-0 of their own that put them ahead 23-21. The teams then knotted the score four times before William Carey scored an ace and a kill for the set point.

Set three was close early, but the guests scored five unanswered on the back end to help close it out. Alcorn opened the final set on a 5-0 run, but the Lady Crusaders went up 10-9 and never surrendered the lead.

Freshman Ashley Samuel scored a season-high 13 kills in the loss. Freshman Jasmine Chambers totaled 21 assists, followed by Dumas with 19. Valadares set a season-high with six blocks, Iosia had 17 digs, and Dixon added 12 digs.

Alcorn is on the road this weekend as the Lady Braves head to Montgomery, Ala. for a SWAC Round-Up this Friday through Sunday. The team starts the conference action with a 10 a.m. match against Texas Southern on Friday. The Lady Tigers (9-8) took a Sept. 22 meeting 3-0 in the first SWAC Round-Up of the season.
