Three Braves Reach Double-Figures in Defeat at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. – A trio of student-athletes reached double-digits in scoring to highlight the night for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program as it fell 109-72 at Creighton on Sunday at the CenturyLink Center.
 
The Braves (0-2), who are in the midst of a three-game road stretch in four days, were led by senior Reginal Johnson who tallied 14 points and five rebounds. Senior Avery Patterson netted 12 points and sophomore Tyler Carter scored a career-high 10.
 
Creighton (2-0) was led by Marcus Foster who recorded 23 points. The Bluejays shot 33-59 (.559) for the game, while the Braves were 22-66 (.333) from the field. Creighton also converted 27-32 (.844) from the free throw line.
 
Alcorn got off to a quick start and led 5-0 after a three-pointer by junior Dante Taylor and a lay-up by sophomore Yalen Reed. Creighton came back with a 7-0 run to take its first lead.
 
Senior A.J. Mosby kept the score tied 11-11 after making a pair of free throws at the 15:36 mark. The Bluejays answered with an 8-0 run to go up 19-11, but the Braves kept it close with a three-pointer by sophomore Maurice Howard which cut the deficit to 23-19 with 12:21 remaining.
 
A lay-up by Carter kept the Braves within striking distance at 28-24 with 9:02 to go, but Creighton responded with an 8-1 run to leap in front 36-25. The Bluejays finished the half strong and carried a 49-36 edge into the intermission.
 
A pair of free throws by Patterson got the deficit back down to single-digits, 54-45 with 16:46 left in the second half. Though, Creighton went on a decisive 20-0 run to lead 74-45 near the halfway point.
 
Alcorn continued to play a lot of different lineups as 13 student-athletes saw action, and nobody on the team played more than 27 minutes.
 
The Braves have a quick turnaround as they'll head to Northern Iowa tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game at the McLeod Center. Alcorn starts the year with five consecutive road games, and its home opener is on Wednesday, Nov. 22 when it hosts Yale from the Ivy League at 12:30 p.m.
 
NOTES
- Johnson has scored in double-figures in 32 of the last 33 games dating back to last season. He notched his 51st career double-figure scoring game. Johnson is now 33 points away from reaching 1,000 in his career.
 
- Patterson registered his fourth career double-figure scoring game. He neared his career-high of 14 points set twice last season. Patterson made a career-high seven free throws which topped his previous best of five against Blue Mountain last year.
 
- Carter registered his first-ever double-digit scoring game and beat his previous career-high of seven points against Selma last season. Carter also matched career-highs with four rebounds and four free throws made.
 
- For the second consecutive game, Alcorn grabbed more offensive rebounds than its opponent. The Braves pulled down 13 compared to Creighton's 11, and it came after a 12-9 offensive rebounding edge over LSU on Friday.
