Alcorn Game Notes | Live Radio

JACKSON, Miss. – Looking to go undefeated against SWAC East Division opponents for the third straight year, the Alcorn State University football program will head to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium to face Jackson State at 2 p.m.

The Braves (7-3, 5-1 SWAC), who clinched the SWAC East Division title last weekend, have posted 11 consecutive wins over division foes. They will become the first team in the history of the league to play in four consecutive SWAC Championship games.

Senior running back De'Lance Turner needs 107 more rushing yards to break the single-season school record of 1,286 set by Rodney Thomas in 1998. Turner ranks second in the nation (FCS) in yards per carry with 8.1, and top-five in rushing yards per game with 118.0.

Senior wide receiver Norlando Veals is the reigning SWAC Offensive Player of the Week winner. He etched career-highs of 253 receiving yards and three touchdown catches against Mississippi Valley State last weekend. Veals leads the SWAC in ranks 21st in the FCS in receiving yards per game with 89.2.

As a team, Alcorn leads the FCS in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score in just 59.3 percent of their trips. The Braves also lead the SWAC in scoring (33.7 ppg), total offense (469.5), rushing offense (251.4 ypg), first downs (20.6 per game) and third down conversions (43.0%).

The Braves defeated MVSU 59-0 in their last outing. Alcorn outgained the Delta Devils 746-215 in total yards. The 746 for the Braves was 10 shy of the school record of 756 set in 1994 against Grambling State. The Braves also outrushed the Delta Devils 424-to-negative 11.

The Tigers (2-8, 2-4 SWAC) are coming off a 10-7 win over Alabama A&M last weekend and have won two of their last three games. Running back Jordan Johnson leads the offense and has rushed for 627 yards and six touchdowns on the season.

The Braves are looking to beat JSU for the third straight season. Alcorn came out on top 35-16 last year and 14-10 in 2015.

The game can be heard live on 91.7 FM or wprl.org with Charles Edmond as the voice of the Braves.

The 2017 SWAC Championship game is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2 at NRG Stadium in Houston. Alcorn will play the winner of Grambling State against Southern on Nov. 25.
