Alcorn Game Notes | Live Radio | Live Stats

LORMAN, Miss. – A rare home game against an Ivy League opponent is on tap Wednesday for the Alcorn State University men's basketball program when it plays Yale in its home opener at 12:30 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

It's just the second time in school history that the Braves (0-5) are hosting an Ivy League school and the first since 1983-84 when they defeated Columbia 70-49. It's Alcorn's second-ever meeting against Yale with the first coming on a neutral site in 1994-95, the Bulldogs (2-3) ended on top 69-56. The Braves are 2-1 all-time against the Ivy League.

The Braves are looking to win their home-opener for the seventh year in-a-row. It would be their first home-opening win over a Division I school since 2001-02 when they topped Jackson State 86-75.

Senior Reginal Johnson is just five points away from the 1,000 mark in his career. He'd be the 39th Brave to reach that milestone. Johnson leads the team in both scoring (12.2) and rebounding (4.4) this season.

Senior A.J. Mosby scores 11.4 points per game and leads the team in assists, steals and minutes. He was selected to the Preseason All-Conference Second-Team and was the only Brave to start in every game last year.

Yale is coming off a 107-42 victory over Curry on Sunday. The Bulldogs also have a win over South Carolina State 86-54. Yale was 18-11 overall and 9-5 in conference last season.

The Bulldogs are led by sophomore guard Oni Miye who averages 13.3 points per game. Also scoring in double-figures is junior forward Blake Reynolds with 10.6 points per outing and junior guard Trey Phills with 10.0 points per contest.

The game can be heard live on 91.7 FM or wprl.org with Charles Edmond as the voice of the Braves. The 12:30 p.m. tip is the earliest on the schedule this season for the Braves.

NOTES
- Alcorn just completed a grueling five-game road trip which featured games in five different states in 10 days.

- The Braves finished 11-2 at home last season where they outscored the opposition 979-807.

- Johnson was named the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. He's the only Preseason Player of the Year in the country, of all Division I conferences, to not start a game in 2016-17. Johnson led the team in scoring last year with 15.6 points per game and was named to the HBCU All-America Second-Team.

- Sophomore forward Yalen Reed ranks third in the league in blocks this year. He's swatted away six in five games. Reed was tabbed the SWAC Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Reed shot .558 from the field last season.

- Alcorn is looking for its first non-conference win over a Division I school since Nov. 22, 2012 when it defeated Samford 69-65. Prior to that, the Braves beat Jacksonville State 70-68 on Dec. 13, 2003. The last time Alcorn topped a school from a Power Five conference was in 1990-91 over Indiana 79-77.
