Braves Travel for Mid-Week Affair at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – Coming off a lopsided win Saturday, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will look to carry momentum into Wednesday when it heads to Tulane for a 7 p.m. tip at Devlin Fieldhouse.

Alcorn (1-6) posted a dominant 103-56 victory over Concordia. The 47-point win was Alcorn's largest margin of victory since 1999-00.
 
The Braves scored over 100 points for the first time since 2011-12 when they defeated Atlanta Christian 106-101 in double overtime. It was the first time Alcorn scored over 100 in regulation since 2000-01 when they topped Jackson State 106-76 in the first round of the SWAC Tournament.
 
Senior Reginal Johnson netted a season-high 20 points. He leads the team in both points per game (13.7) and rebounds per game (4.4) this season. Johnson is aiming for his fifth consecutive double-figure scoring game and seventh in eight games this year.
 
Senior A.J. Mosby scores 11.6 points per game and leads the team in assists, steals and minutes. He was selected to the Preseason All-Conference Second-Team and was the only Brave to start in every game last year. Mosby ranks second in the SWAC this season in field goal percentage with a .525 clip.
 
As a team, Alcorn leads the conference in assists with 13.3 per game.
 
The Green Wave (5-1) opened the season with five straight wins including an 80-53 score over Colorado State. Though, Tulane is looking to shake off its first loss of the season after falling at Georgia State 70-59 on Sunday.
 
Melvin Frazier leads the team with 20.2 points and 8.2 rebounds in 35.3 minutes per game. He's shooting .653 from the field and .500 from beyond-the-arc.
 
Also averaging in double-digits for Tulane are Cameron Reynolds (15.0), Samir Sehic (13.3) and Ray Ona Embo (10.7). The Green Wave score 78.8 points per game as a team and also carry a +7.7 rebounding margin on the season.
 
Alcorn is looking for its first non-conference win over a Division I school since Nov. 22, 2012 when it defeated Samford 69-65. Though, all wins in 2012-13 were vacated by the NCAA. Prior to that, the Braves beat Jacksonville State 70-68 on Dec. 13, 2003.
 
NOTES
- Wednesday marks just the second-ever meeting between Alcorn and Tulane. The Green Wave took an 83-41 decision in 2011-12.
 
- Johnson surpassed the 1,000-point mark against Yale. He became the 39th Brave to reach that milestone. Johnson was named the 2017-18 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. He's the only Preseason Player of the Year in the country, of all Division I conferences, to not start a game in 2016-17. Johnson led the team in scoring last year with 15.6 points per game and was named to the HBCU All-America Second-Team.
 
- Sophomore Yalen Reed, the SWAC Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, ranks top-five in the league in blocks. He's swatted away eight in seven games. Reed shot .558 from the field last season.
 
- Alcorn opened the season with a grueling five-game road trip which featured games in five different states in 10 days.
 
- The Braves were picked to finish fourth in the SWAC Preseason Poll. They bring back two starters - Mosby and senior Avery Patterson - from a team that played in the SWAC Championship game. The Braves have finished second in the regular season in back-to-back years.
 
- Head Coach Montez Robinson is in his third season and was the 2016-17 SWAC Coach of the Year winner. He's coached Alcorn to consecutive 13-5 conference records, marking the first back-to-back winning seasons at Alcorn in 15 years. Robinson hoists a 26-10 career SWAC record.
