Braves Return Home for Quick Turnaround against Fisk University

LORMAN, Miss. – With just one day to prepare, the Alcorn State University men's basketball program will look to bounce back Tuesday when it hosts Fisk University at 7 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
 
The Braves (2-8) are coming off a 78-58 defeat at Iowa State where they led by as many as nine points in the first half. Alcorn led for 15 of the 20 minutes in the first half and trailed by just one at the intermission. Sophomore Devon Brewer recorded career-highs of 15 points and six rebounds.
 
"I want to be able to duplicate the way that we played in the first half against Iowa State. If we can continue to play like that for a full 40 minutes it will build a lot of confidence in the guys, especially as we near conference play," said head coach Montez Robinson. "I'm looking for that same type of effort and for the guys to pay attention to details and come out focused."
 
In Alcorn's last home game, the Braves posted a lopsided 89-50 victory over Rust College on Dec. 1 as four Braves tallied career-highs in scoring. Alcorn then took off nine days from competition to study for final exams.
 
Senior A.J. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist:turnover ratio with a 3.1 mark. He also ranks top-five in the league in field goal percentage, assists and steals. Mosby averages 11.9 points and 3.6 assists per game. He's looking for his sixth double-figure scoring game in the last seven outings.
 
Junior Dante Sterling averages 10.0 points per game and has made at least one three-pointer in every game this season. Sterling is coming off a 12-point performance against ISU, and drained a career-high 17 points in the last home game against Rust.
 
As a team, the Braves lead the conference in assists (14.6 apg), assist:turnover ratio (1.0) and three-pointers made per game (8.3).
 
Fisk (7-3) is an NAIA program that will play its first Division I opponent Monday at Jackson State. Ryainni Scott leads the team with 11.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, while El Paso Pitts averages 10.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per outing.

NOTES
- Tuesday marks the first-ever meeting between Alcorn and Fisk.
 
- Alcorn is 2-1 at home this season which includes a dominant 103-56 win over Concordia. The 47-point win was Alcorn's largest margin of victory since 1999-00. The Braves scored over 100 points for the first time since 2011-12 when they defeated Atlanta Christian 106-101 in double overtime. It was the first time Alcorn scored over 100 in regulation since 2000-01 when they topped Jackson State 106-76 in the first round of the SWAC Tournament.
 
- The Braves are 13-3 at home over the last two seasons.
 
- Tragedy struck Alcorn at Tulane when senior Reginal Johnson broke his right leg. Johnson was taken off on a stretcher and transported to a nearby medical facility after an air cast was placed on his leg. Johnson is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
 
- Johnson was named the 2017-18 SWAC Preseason Player of the Year. He surpassed the 1,000-point mark against Yale. Johnson is the only Preseason Player of the Year in the country, of all Division I conferences, to not start a game in 2016-17. Johnson led the team in scoring last year with 15.6 points per game and was named to the HBCU All-America Second-Team.
 
- Sophomore Yalen Reed, the SWAC Preseason Co-Defensive Player of the Year, ranks top-five in the league in blocks. He's swatted away 10 in 10 games. Reed turned in a career game against Rust where he tallied 20 points and 13 rebounds.
