ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball squad held a 22-1 advantage in points off the bench in its 68-60 victory over Mississippi Valley State University Saturday at the R.W. Harrison Complex.
Senior
Tori Spann contributed 13 of those points, marking a new season high. Freshman
Aysha Kirkland added seven while senior
Talisa Sherman scored two to round out the bench scoring.
Junior
Alexus Freeman fronted the Lady Braves (8-15, 8-4 SWAC) with 22 points. This was Freeman's second 20-plus point performance of the season. She converted 8-of-13 from the field and six free throws and also totaled five assists.
Senior
Brianna Luton rounded out the double-figure scorers, pouring in 10 points and knocking down multiple treys for the ninth time in league play.
Devilettes (9-14, 6-6 SWAC) post Ashley Beal tallied a game-high 27 points and 20 boards.
Alcorn raced off to a quick start, scoring 10 of the contest's first 12 points. The game came to a 10-point tie at 5:34 before Alcorn ended the remainder of first quarter on a 12-1 run, getting points from Kirkland, Sherman and Spann early on. The Lady Braves outscored MVSU 22-11 in the opening frame.
Although the advantage was just one point at the half, The Lady Braves surged for a 24-point third and limited the Devilettes to just 16 as Freeman scored eight points during the quarter on a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
Alcorn's lead was brought down to two at 4:44 left to play before the Lady Braves scored five straight and held off MVSU from that point.
NOTES
- Senior Henrietta Wells recorded three blocks for her 17th multiple-block outing this season.
- Alcorn ranks atop the league in protecting the three-point line. The Lady Braves hounded the Devilettes to just 1-of-9 from long range.
- Freeman played all 40 minutes of the contest, marking the third such occurrence this season. The other two were by junior Tia Sanders.
- Alcorn shot 50 percent (26-52) from the floor for the first time this season.
